Bumblebee, the first of several planned Transformers spin-off films, is going to take the franchise in a different direction by focusing on a single character in a different time period. A big change from the other movies is that the Transformers will adapt to period-accurate vehicles.
ComicBook.com recently got a chance to interview Transformers: The Last Knight producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura about where Bumblebee will be taking the series. He took a moment to note that he’s really excited to see the robots in disguise transform into vehicles from the 1980s:
“You know I am looking forward to in the Bumblebee movie reliving the eighties Transformers and what those kind of cars can look like, so I think that’s really fun.”
Given the 1980s setting, it’s not surprising to learn that Bumblebee and the other Transformers that will be appear alongside him will also be based on 1980s cars. However, given the latest entry’s terrible reviews across the board, the franchise will most likely need to take an approach that distances itself a bit from the style of directing that Michael Bay has brought to the franchise thus far. Perhaps Bumblebee could be the first step in course-correcting the Transformers franchise at the domestic box office.
Transformers: The Last Knight will make a last stand on June 21, 2017. The film’s cast includes Mark Wahlberg, Stanley Tucci, Isabela Moner, Josh Duhamel, Tyrese Gibson, John Turturro, Laura Haddock, Anthony Hopkins, and Santiago Cabrera. The vocal talents of Peter Cullen, John Goodman, John DiMaggio, and Mark Ryan will also be featured.
Bumblebee rolls out into theaters sometime in 2018.
