Tyrese Gibson Calls Dwayne Johnson ‘Selfish’ After ‘Fast & Furious 9’ Delay

Fate of the FuriousAfter Universal announced that the release date for the ninth Fast and Furious film had been pushed back a year, series star Tyrese Gibson called out Dwayne Johnson for delaying the film to make room for the recently confirmed spin-off featuring Johnson’s Luke Hobbs and Jason Statham’s Deckard Shaw. Now, Gibson clarified the reason behind his grievances towards the spin-off during an interview with TMZ.

Gibson explained that he has no issue with Dwayne Johnson starring in a Fast and Furious spin-off, but instead, he wished the project had not delayed the ninth film of the franchise:

“I dunno what they’re doing, you know. Everybody coming at me like I’m hating on Dwayne for his spinoff. I’m not. The truth is, I just wish he was releasing it at a different time.”

Gibson later elaborated, calling Dwayne Johnson “selfish” for pushing back production on the ninth Fast and Furious film:

“It’s not a conflict, it’s just, The Fate of the Furious is like a holiday. The Fast and the Furious family, the fans, the tribe–the people that have been rocking with us for 16 years—you know pushing our release date back, it’s only happened one time in the history of The Fast and the Furious. It’s when we lost our brother Paul Walker. You know, so what’s the reason we’re pushing the release date back now? I just got a problem with Dwayne when it appears he’s being selfish. It appears that he’s so focused on furthering his own self-interest; he’s making decisions from the seat that he’s sitting.”

One can certainly understand why Gibson would be frustrated over having to wait longer to reunite with his co-stars and friends. Hopefully, Gibson and Johnson can listen to Vin Diesel’s call for unity and help deliver two thrilling projects that appeal to fans of the franchise.

The Fast and the Furious 9 is scheduled to be released in theaters on April 10, 2020 and the Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham Fast & Furious spin-off is set to be released on July 26, 2019.

Why you gotta be like that, Rock? Postponing and ish….
The rest of us gotta eat too”

So I take it that all that relentless, shameless (obnoxious) campaigning through social media for the role of Green Lantern didn’t pan out, huh?
    Weird, that.

Who could have thought studios wouldn’t be completely enamored or convinced by that style of “auditioning”?
