Sony has screened footage from their upcoming Marvel solo movie, Venom, and it features some extended trailer shots, as well as a brand new symbiote going up against the titular anti-hero.
Venom was the subject of controvesry amongst Marvel fans when the first teaser dropped at the beginning of this year. The lack of finished special effects, which meant no apperance by Venom himself, left some fans excited for the finished project, while others likened it to the bland superhero filsm of the early-2000’s. Much of that controversy changed after the second trailer revealed the first look at Venom himself, which fans have fallen in love with.
Now that the film seems to be gaining more positive buzz before its October release date, it seems like the perfect time to unveil to the world. Well, to the world of Comic-Con atleast, because there’s no news yet on whether or not the footage will make its way online. Apparently, some of the footage featured unfinished effects, so its not likely we’ll see the footage for some time, but that didn’t seem to take down people’s excitment for the footage, which was described as more of an extended trailer.
The footage opens with Tom Hardy’s character, Eddie Brock, walking into a convenience store looking disheveled. After the woman at the counter comments on his bad appearance and reccommends that he try out yoga, Brock leaves the store and does just that. Brock is seen meditating as shots of him running through the woods flashes across the screen. After hitting his head on his couch and taking some pills, Brock calls a friend to tell them that he doesn’t feel well. In another scene, Brock passes by a car window and sees Venom in the reflection, before being thrown against a nearby wall.
Another scene featured the film’s villain Carlton Drake, played by Riz Ahmed. Drake works for the Life Foundation and is seen doing symbiote-related experiments with a test subject. The subject’s body horrifically contorts as he merges with the symbiote, which Drake seems to think is the next step in human evolution. The nefarious villain finally tests the symbiote on Brock, before the footage cuts to him beating up a group of men in his apartment. Footage then showed Brock’s motorcycle crushed between two cars, but he is left unscatched thanks to Venom coming to the rescue. Venom informs Brock that his old life is officially over and merges with him so the two can have a face-to-face, man-to-symbiote conversation. After the titular anti-hero heals Brock, he merges with him to form the iconic duo we all know and love.
Drake is apparently very proud about what he’s accomplished with the merging of Brock and Venom, but Brock also seems to be quickly become a fan of his new abilities. The footage shows someone who isn’t a fan of the new powers, Brock’s love interest Anne Weying, played by Michelle Williams. Then fans are treated to a series of action scenes. One involves a woman shooting spikes out of her back, another involves Venom taking out a group of bad guys by transforming his arms into symbiote axes. Then the money shot, Venom figting the symbiote Riot. It’s been revealed that Riot will in fact be the mutated version of Riz Ahmed’s Carlton Drake.
The final shot of the trailer features the convenience store in the beginning of the trailer. A man is bothering the woman working at the counter and Venom threatens to eat the man’s face off. The man asks Venom who he is, before the titular anti-hero deliveres the familiar line “We are Venom.”, before revealing half of Brock’s human face amongst the symbiote. Venom then eats the man’s face off, like he said he would, before turning back into Brock and wishes “Goodnight” to the woman in the store.
As you an see, the Comic-Con footage was jam packed with new information and footage. We’ll be sure to keep you updated on all news regarding Venom and Sony’s Spider-Man-ish universe as more news becomes available.
