Today, the final trailer for War for the Planet of the Apes hit the the web and with it came our final new look at the film before its July 14 release. The latest installment in the franchise, War brings the current trilogy of films to a close; however, the man who brings Caesar to life – Andy Serkis – says that there could be more Apes films in the future.
Speaking with Yahoo Movies, Serkis had this to say: “We’re saying this is the final chapter in the trilogy,” adding, “It’s by no means the end of the road in terms of Apes films.”
Serkis’ words aren’t particularly shocking given the longevity of the franchise, which has seen nine movies (including War) and two TV series over the past 59 years. However, it is nice to hear one of the stars clarify that the latest film will close out the current trilogy and that more films may come.
“It was always the idea that it would chart the evolution of the rising new species of apes,” Serkis said when asked if the filmmakers intended to create a trilogy from the get-go. “But I think Caesar was always going to be central to that.”
Going on to state that War is “a very Caesar-centric story,” Serkis reveals that the character is in “a downward spiral, a desperate search for revenge.”
In War for the Planet of the Apes, the third chapter of the critically acclaimed blockbuster franchise, Caesar and his apes are forced into a deadly conflict with an army of humans led by a ruthless Colonel. After the apes suffer unimaginable losses, Caesar wrestles with his darker instincts and begins his own mythic quest to avenge his kind. As the journey finally brings them face to face, Caesar and the Colonel are pitted against each other in an epic battle that will determine the fate of both their species and the future of the planet.
The film stars Andy Serkis, Woody Harrelson, Judy Greer, Steve Zahn, Karin Konoval, Ty Olson, and Alessandro Juliani.
War for the Planet of the Apes hits theaters July 14, 2017.
