We all remember Howard the Duck, don’t we? Probably best forgotten, but for those unaware, there was a legitimate (though I’m not sure the word legitimate works best here) live-action movie about Howard the Duck. It was 1986. This was way back before Marvel was ever a major movie player and the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe as we know it today didn’t exist.
At the end of Guardians of the Galaxy, everyone expected one of the Avengers to show up, much like Thor did at the end of Doctor Strange. Instead, we got Howard the Duck and… to be honest, I can’t remember what the post-credits scene entailed.
At the Heroes & Villains Fan Fest this weekend, Guardians of the Galaxy star Dave Bautista indicated that hope is not lost for a Howard the Duck movie if James Gunn is the one to direct.
“As long as there’s a James Gunn directing the film, there’s a possibility of a Howard the Duck.“
It’s no secret that Gunn is a fan of Howard the Duck comics and has spoken about the possibility of reintroducing the character into the MCU.
“I’ll be honest with you, I was just talking about it with my assistant right now. It’s possible Howard could reappear as more of a character in the Marvel Universe. But if people think that’s going to lead to a Howard The Duck movie, that’s probably not going to happen in the next four years. Who knows after that?”
Howard the Duck was met with so much criticism when it first came out thirty years ago. As to whether or not Gunn will ever direct a new version of the film or if Marvel would even entertain the notion remain to be seen.
