In 1996, Will Smith saved the world from aliens as Captain Steven Hiller in Independence Day. A couple years ago Smith was offered the chance to return to the role of Hiller in Independence Day: Resurgence but had also been offered the role of Deadshot in David Ayer’s Suicide Squad.
While speaking with Entertainment Weekly Smith opened up about the decision and why he felt it was important to move forward with his career, instead of revisiting an older character.
“I had the two screenplays in front of me for the Independence Day 2 and for Suicide Squad. I had to choose between the two of those. Even the choice of going to Suicide Squad — nothing about the qualities of the movie — but the choice of trying to go forward versus clinging and clawing backwards. I do want to aggressively go forward and do new things and create and hopefully be able to stumble upon a new heyday.”
This is a different take on the story that was told by director Roland Emmerich. Emmerich had said that Smith turned down Resurgence because he didn’t want to do that many sci-fi movies back-to-back.
It appears that Smith made the better decision by joining the cast of Suicide Squad. Squad broke records at the box office, earning over 745.6 million at the box office. Squad was also received better critically and with fans compared to Independence Day: Resurgence.
Starring Will Smith, Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, Jay Hernandez, Karen Fukuhara, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Ike Barinholtz, Scott Eastwood and Cara Delevingne, Suicide Squad is now available on Digital HD.
