Wonder Woman first made her appearance in comics back in December of 1941. Ever since, she has been becoming an iconic within comics and pop culture and an inspiration to women everywhere. This year she celebrates her 75th birthday and is doing it style.
The character of Wonder Woman has reached new heights, being front and center in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice as portrayed by Gal Gadot and getting her own solo DC movie. In comics’ she has her own tie-in series to DC Comics’ on-going Rebirth storyline.
As part of the celebration DC Entertainment is pulling out all of the stops. DC will be rolling out tons of new media, all featuring Wonder Woman, comics and new merchandise.
DC Entertainment president Diane Nelson spoke about how importance this celebration is for the conversations taking place around women in entertainment and pop culture.
“There’s no better time than now. The overall conversation that’s happening in our culture right now – about having stronger gender equality representation in media and in government and in education and all of it just makes it the perfect time to see a character like Wonder Woman out there.”
For fans of Wonder Woman the merchandise will be must-haves. At San Diego Comic Con in July fans will be able to purchase a Mattel as a special-edition Barbie of the hero. If fashion and wearing your Wonder Woman pride is more your style, fans will soon be able to see clothing with brands like Valentino and Converse creating casual cosplay wear, which will be for day or night.
With a solo Wonder Woman movie nearing completion, it appears that this character will live on for another 75 years to come.
