Wonder Woman ghostwriter Joye Murchison Kelly is set to win the Bill Finger Award for Excellence in Comic Book Writing in this Friday night’s Eisners.
Mark Evanier, a TV writer and Comic-Con regular, has described Kelly as the most obscure person in the history of the comic books. Kelly had served as the ghostwriter for Wonder Woman under the pen name “William Marston” from 1944 to 1947, but all her contributions were uncredited and therefore went unknown for years. She had actually begun working on Wonder Woman when she was 20 years old. Now, she’s being awarded for her contributions at 94 years old:
“She’s the most obscure person in the history of the comic book industry, but in the 1940s, she was the ghostwriter for ‘Wonder Woman.’”
In honor of Kelly, the convention is paying for all her expenses in celebration of her contributions. The creator is ecstatic at finally being recognized — the first woman to be awarded, no less:
“It’s overwhelming. When you are 94 and somebody is suddenly on the telephone telling you that you’ve got the highest award given to a comics writer, and besides you will be the first living woman to get it — I couldn’t believe what he was saying.”
It’s only fitting for Kelly to be awarded the Bill Finger award, as the Batman co-creator himself had gone decades before finally being recognized as one half of the recipe that brought forth one of the most iconic superheroes ever.
