Stand aside, Star-Lord – as of this weekend, Wonder Woman has surpassed Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2‘s box office take.
Variety is reporting that Wonder Woman is expected to end this weekend at a $389M total, which has allowed the movie to finally get ahead of Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2‘s current gross ($387.3M). Guardians 2 was released four weeks before Wonder Woman, so that reflects very well on the latter, especially considering that Wonder Woman opened smaller ($103.3M) than the Guardians sequel ($146.5M). Guardians 2 ultimately wins on the global front with a $860M total compared to Wonder Woman‘s $779.4M total, but the former has opened in all its international markets while the latter has yet to open in Japan, which will surely boost those figures.
If Wonder Woman‘s incredibly strong box office performance continues to hold, then there’s a real chance that the movie could surpass the domestic gross of the original Spider-Man ($403.7M, unadjusted for inflation), which would make the movie the most successful single-superhero origin story movie ever made. It certainly seems possible for the movie to pass $400M in two weeks or so, which – considering that the movie was expected to a decent $65M opening – is something that seemed to be unthinkable prior to the film’s release. In any case, Wonder Woman has established herself as the #1 Summer movie of 2017, a record that’s not likely to be beaten this late into the game. You go, girl!
Wonder Woman is playing in theaters. Its cast includes Gal Gadot as Diana Prince (Wonder Woman), Chris Pine as Steve Trevor, Connie Nielsen as Queen Hippolyta, Robin Wright as General Antiope, Lucy Davis as Etta Candy, David Thewlis as Sir Patrick Morgan, Elena Anaya as Doctor Isabel Maru (Doctor Poison), and Danny Huston as General Erich Ludendorff.
