Patty Jenkins has created one of this decade’s most successful superhero films in Wonder Woman. Yet it was not something she expected would be so universally acclaimed, especially in the wake of several divisive movies from the DC Expanded Universe.
In an interview with legendary superhero movie director Richard Donner, Jenkins explained how dealing with such an iconic character could lead to people having a difference of opinion in how she handled the source material. She explained:
“But I went into the release of the movie assuming it would be, in best case, a mixed bag. And I sort of braced myself for it, where I thought, well, ‘Listen, you’re doing a beloved superhero; it’s always going to end up being at least 40%, oh you could have done, blah blah blah.’ So, the support and positivity that the movie has received, and also just the people wanting to talk about what we wanted to talk about in the movie and not other things, has been stunning.”

The film stars Gal Gadot as Diana Prince/Wonder Woman, Chris Pine as Steve Trevor, Robin Wright as General Antiope, Connie Nielsen as Queen Hippolyta, Lisa Loven Kongsli as Menalippe, Danny Huston as General Erich Ludendorff, David Thewlis as Sir Patrick Morgan, Elena Anaya as Doctor Maru, Ewen Bremner as Charlie, Saïd Taghmaoui as Sameer and Eugene Brave Rock as the Chief. Here’s the official synopsis:
’Wonder Woman’ hits movie theaters around the world next summer when Gal Gadot returns as the title character in the epic action adventure from director Patty Jenkins. 5 Things The ‘Batgirl’ Movie Needs To Get Right
DC has been on a roll recently with reports concerning future spin-off films. Some of these reported projects are just speculative, but a Batgirl movie from director Joss Whedon is something that’s already been officially confirmed to be happening. With Whedon heading the film, there is a lot of excitement in the air, but this is a challenging project to tackle and do right. Batgirl is much beloved, and outside of animation and some comics, the character has not been given the time to lead a feature film.
Making Batgirl the lead of a movie may sound like a challenging concept, but it can definitely work. There are things that the film can do that can be new and original, but there’s a lot more to it than that. Warner Bros. and DC have to find a way to make sure that aspects and creative decisions made on the film reflect the character in a positive way. If everything’s done right, Batgirl could make for a truly great superhero film.
