The wait is officially over as Warner Bros’ Wonder Woman, directed by Patty Jenkins, starring Gal Gadot as Diana Prince a.k.a. the iconic Amazon Princess, is now playing in theaters as of today. After her debut in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Gadot is back as DC’s most iconic heroine where we learn how Diana became Wonder Woman.
With the previews that took place last night, the film has already opened up strong at the box office. According to a new report, Wonder Woman opened up to $11M, which is the strongest opening for a film directed by a female director since Sam Taylor Johnson’s Fifty Shades of Grey ($8.6M). In addition to that, Gitesh Pandya from Box Office Guru is reporting that the Diana Prince film edged out the openings of Fast 8 ($10.4M) and Marvel’s Doctor Strange ($9.4M).
“Before she was Wonder Woman, she was Diana, princess of the Amazons, trained to be an unconquerable warrior. Raised on a sheltered island paradise, when an American pilot crashes on their shores and tells of a massive conflict raging in the outside world, Diana leaves her home, convinced she can stop the threat. Fighting alongside man in a war to end all wars, Diana will discover her full powers…and her true destiny.”
Directed by Patty Jenkins, Wonder Woman also stars Chris Pine as Steve Trevor, Lucy Davis as Etta Candy, Connie Nielsen as Queen Hippolyta, Robin Wright as General Antiope, Lisa Loven Kongsli as Menalippe, Danny Huston as General Erich Ludendorff, David Thewlis as Sir Patrick Morgan, Elena Anaya as Doctor Maru, Ewen Bremner as Charlie, Saïd Taghmaoui as Sameer and Eugene Brave Rock as the Chief.
