The last time we saw the X-Men, they were doing pretty good. They beat Apocalypse and formed new alliances with Magneto and Mystique. However, for our beloved Mutants, trouble is always around the corner. According to OmegaUnderground, the upcoming Apocalypse sequel – which was rumoured to be called X-Men: Supernova – will finally begin shooting on June 4th. The shoot will last for five months, as it will come to a close in October. The upcoming film has been rumoured to be directed by Days of Future Past producer, Simon Kinberg. However, 20th Century Fox, nor Kinberg, have confirmed or denied these allegations.
In some more interesting news, the film will not be called X-Men: Supernova. Thanks to an interview with SlashFilm, Kinberg revealed:
“It’s not called Supernova. One of the things we do when we make these X-Men movies, to be totally candid, is — any of these movies, it’s on Star Wars, too — is you come up with fake names to throw people off the scent and when you’re out making the movie, the signs that show you where the locations are say Nova, or whatever the fake title is, and people figure it out, and I don’t even know why we do it anymore.
But at any rate, it’s not called Supernova. That was the code name for it. There’s yet another code name now. What I can tell you is that we’re in early stages of prep on it…”
Perhaps the coolest news to come out of all of this, is the film’s potential new title. OmegaUnderground is reporting that the movie has two – potential – new titles. One of which is X-Men: Dark Phoenix, and the other is X-Men: Teen Spirit. Now, both have significant meaning in the world of the X-Men and the real world. Of course, this project has been heavily rumoured to tackle the Dark Phoenix saga in a more accurate interpretation, since the movie was announced.
However, Teen Spirit embodies the 1990s feel Fox are going for. The title, which we are going to assume derives from the Nirvana song of the same name, just feels so right. When we left the characters off in Apocalypse, the team was particularly young, with Mystique in the lead. Thanks to interviews and announcements over the course of the last few months, we know that both Sophie Turner (Jean Grey) and James McAvoy (Professor Xavier) will return in this picture. Nicholas Hoult is also expected to reprise his role as Hank McCoy/Beast.
So, what do you guys think of all this? Honestly? I would love to see Fox title this film Teen Spirit. It has a nice edge of Dark Phoenix and is not so comic book-based. Either way, we should expect an official announcement from Fox within the next couple of months.
Logan is in theatres now.
