Zendaya Confirms Involvement In Sony’s Spider-Man Reboot

attends the BET AWARDS '14 Debra Lee's Pre-Dinner held at Milk Studios on June 28, 2014 in Los Angeles, California.

Disney star and musician Zendaya has confirmed her involvement in the upcoming Spider-Man reboot on The Ellen Degeneres Show. While she couldn’t provide details about her character or involvement with the project, she was allowed to say she is offically on board.

“I can’t say anything else other than I’m going to be in it.”

She added that she has no idea when the film will start shooting or she needs to be on set.

“I have no idea … to be completely honest. But it’s very exciting, when it comes to the acting space, I am basically unknown. I’ve never been in a real movie before or anything like that, so I had to start from the bottom like anyone else.”

When the news first broke about Zendaya joining the project, it was suggested that her character’s name would be Michele. Could this possibly be an incarnation of Michele Gonzales from the comics who is the sister of Vin Gonzales and at one point was Peter Parker’s roommate and a potential love interest?

Zendaya will be joining Tom Holland and Marissa Tomei in the upcoming film which is scheduled to hit theaters on July 7, 2017.

Tom Holland (Spiderman) has already made an appearance as the web-slinging character in the most recent trailer for Captain America: Civil War. According to research firm ListenFirst the trailer for the film dethrone Suicide Squad for the trailer with the most likes, retweets and other Twitter engagement of any other released this year.

  • So it’s possible we’re going to see a race swap this time around and introduce Mary Jane as an similarly aged African American girl from school, rather than the glowing red-maned, green eyed girl next door that Aunt May sets Peter up with? I’m not oppose to race swapping, I think Fishburne crushes as Perry White, I think even gender swaps work. But when you take a MAIN character in a long running series like Spider-Man, and change it so drastically from what audiences expect, it can backfire. I think with Sony/Marvel, who are trying for a 3rd reboot, may want to be careful here.

You can swap the race of certain characters, but others don’t really work quite as well. Mary-Jane is well recognized by her red hair. I’ve never met a red haired African American. It would feel weird to me. It would be less distracting then an African American Peter Parker, but it would still feel kind of weird. If you want to change the race of like Betty Brant for example, sure, fine. Her character doesn’t have that same stand-out recognizable feature.

I personally think they should stay away from Mary-Jane and Gwen Stacy and keep them for later down the road. In the comic books, they both came into play after high school/early college. If they really want to focus on a high school Peter Parker, they should focus on Betty Brant, Liz Allen and Flash Thompson. That’s what I would do, but I’m not the one in charge so we’ll see what happens.
