Spider-Man: Homecoming will be the titular hero’s second outing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but a number of new characters will be making their MCU debut when the film hits theaters next month. One of the most mysterious new roles has been Zendaya’s Michelle, whose identity has caused months of speculation among fans due to the fact that she does not appear to be directly based on any character from the Marvel comics. Now, the junior novelization of the film has revealed that the full name of Zendaya’s character is actually Michelle Toomes, making her a relative of the film’s primary antagonist, Adrian Toomes/The Vulture.
The news may come a surprise to many who theorized that Michelle was a modern incarnation of Mary Jane Watson, though it certainly explains why Marvel and Sony have kept the character’s full identity under wraps.
Trailers for the film have emphasized that Adrian Toomes’ actions are motivated by a desire to provide for his family and Michelle’s relationship to him certainly raises the stakes in Peter Parker’s mission to thwart the villain now that one of his close friends will be directly affected by their conflict.
A young Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tom Holland), who made his sensational debut in Captain America: Civil War, begins to navigate his newfound identity as the web-slinging super hero in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Thrilled by his experience with the Avengers, Peter returns home, where he lives with his Aunt May (Marisa Tomei), under the watchful eye of his new mentor Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.). Peter tries to fall back into his normal daily routine – distracted by thoughts of proving himself to be more than just your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man – but when the Vulture (Michael Keaton) emerges as a new villain, everything that Peter holds most important will be threatened.
Directed by Jon Watts, the film stars Tom Holland, Michael Keaton, Zendaya, Donald Glover, Jacob Batalon, Laura Harrier, Tony Revolori, Tyne Daly, Bokeem Woodbine, Michael Chernus, Kenneth Choi, Hannibal Buress, Martin Starr, Michael Barbieri, Angourie Rice, Abraham Attah, Marisa Tomei and Robert Downey Jr.
Spider-Man: Homecoming will be released in theaters on July 7, 2017.
