Daniel Craig is reportedly close to suiting back up as 007 once more.
No one will forget Craig’s public display of disposition during the press tour for Spectre but despite the actor going as far to say he would rather “slash his own wrists” than reprise the role of James Bond again, Craig still has a good relationship with Bond producer Barbara Broccoli. Following Spectre, Craig starred opposite David Oyelowo off-broadway in the Broccoli produced Othello.
Page Six now reports that several Hollywood sources have told them that Broccoli has “just about persuaded Daniel Craig to do one more Bond movie,” thanks to positive reactions to Othello. One source also claims rumored screenwriters Neal Purvis and Robert Wade are indeed writing the script for the next installment of the franchise:
“Daniel was very pleased with how ‘Othello’ went and the great reviews. Now Daniel’s talks with Barbara are going in the right direction. They have a script — screenwriting duo Neal Purvis and Robert Wade [who’ve penned several Bond movies] are writing and they’ll go into production as soon as Daniel is ready to commit.”
After reports emerged that Tom Hiddleston was being eyed to replace Craig as Bond last year, executive producer Calum McDougall revealed that Craig was still Broccoli’s and executive producer Michael G. Wilson’s first choice to play Bond. Craig himself also said would miss the role terribly were he not to return. While Craig has only fulfilled four of the five Bond films in his contract, his initial reticence to return to the role could generate enough negative buzz for his contract to be dissolved.
Page Six’s source also added that “Barbara Broccoli doesn’t like Tom Hiddleston, he’s a bit too smug and not tough enough to play James Bond.” The source claims that Hiddleston’s former relationship with Taylor Swift followed by his speech at this year’s Golden Globes led to Broccoli’s dislike for Hiddleston so it doesn’t sound like he has a shot at playing the iconic spy at this time.
As of this moment, there is no official word on the 25th installment of the Bond franchise but EON productions was rumored back in February to be in advanced negotiations to shoot the film in Croatia.
What do you think? Do you want to see Craig back in the role or would you rather see someone like Idris Elba (who has clearly been the popular choice amongst fans) get the chance to play the iconic spy? Let us know in the comments below.
