It’s time for a Death Battle! Spawn creator Todd McFarlane gives his thoughts on the character’s upcoming fight against Ghost Rider in the viral online series.
It’s safe to say that Spawn has been making a comeback in recent years. While the character has never truly left, with Todd McFarlane continuing to publish issues of the series at Image Comics to this day, he certainly took a backseat in the world of pop culture. Yet following the character’s appearance in Mortal Kombat 11 and last year’s confirmation that the upcoming reboot will be based off King Spawn, fans are hungry for any media they can get starring Hell’s Chosen.
This to say, the internet exploded when it was announced that the online series Death Battle would be bringing Spawn back into its roster to face-off against Ghost Rider in their next episode. Debates have been raging for the past week over which of the iconic characters will end up taking the crown. The matchup was brought up to Spawn creator Todd McFarlane during a recent interview with Heroic Hollywood at Megacon in Orlando. And according to him, the winner couldn’t be more obvious.
“Spawn wins. Spawn beats Superman. Oddly, if you’ve been paying attention, and you’ve seen what he’s done in the last 30 years, if people wish to combine all of that at one moment, I don’t think there’s any other character that can say they have the power that he has to the point that you could go look up on YouTube.”
“There are some people put videos together and go ‘Spawns too overpowered’ because when they go through it and they go ‘he did this in this issue and this in this issue and this and this and this and this and this, and they go on for about 40 minutes, then you just go ‘okay, if you put all that together into one punch, right? I’m being silly, but it was like, it’s a knockout punch. And so the piece that I have to do is give reasons why he’s not using all of those powers so that there’s no jeopardy in the storytelling.
Todd McFarlane Reveals His Dream Death Battle For Spawn
Even though Todd McFarlane thinks that a fight against Ghost Rider is a foregone conclusion, the creator seemingly has his own Death Battle he’d like to see come to life. While McFarlane admitted that Spawn’s sheer level of power makes it hard for any character to take him on in a fair fight, especially those heavily associated with hell, there is one comic hero he hopes to see fight the Hellspawn: Superman.
“I’m probably completely biased, but I’m like, nobody takes down Spawn,” McFarlane continued when discussing the upcoming Death Battle. “Who’s the guy who’s taking down Spawn, right? That’s just a hell guy, that’s Ghost Rider, he takes out Ghost Rider, right? All the other guys. the question is, can Superman take him out? That’s the bigger question, so, hopefully we get to that battle.”
The upcoming Spawn vs Ghost Rider Death Battle marks the third time that the beloved Hellspawn appears in the series. His first appearance was in the show’s 10th episode against Kratos from the God of War series. More recently, Spawn appeared in their spin-off show DBX to face-off against fellow Todd McFarlane creation Venom. The full fight can be seen below.
