‘Tomb Raider’ Star Alicia Vikander Provides Update On Sequel

Misha Green is directing the sequel.

Tomb Raider star Alicia Vikander has provided an exciting update on the long-gestating sequel.

Alicia Vikander debuted as Lara Croft in 2018’s Tomb Raider, which was both a success at the box office and received considerable acclaim from fans and critics. Shortly afterward it was announced that Ben Wheatley would be directing the sequel. Wheatley later departed from the project and was replaced by Misha Green, the showrunner behind Lovecraft Country.

The film doesn’t hold a release date and hasn’t started filming, but Alicia Vikander revealed to Total Film that she’s currently developing the sequel alongside Misha Green and is excited by the early days of pre-production.

“When the studio first said they were interested in a sequel, I got really excited. When Misha was mentioned to me and I saw the work on Lovecraft Country, I was extremely impressed.”

“It’s so much fun on the Zooms I’ve had with Misha to finally sit with another woman my own age. I get to talk about big action set pieces and stunts that we want to make. I’m hoping that we get on track and get to do something together.”

The Tomb Raider sequel appears to be in its early days of production but the first film was such a success that it’s unlikely it gets shelved. Misha Green is also working on a Black Canary film for HBO Max, so it’s unclear which project is at the top of the director’s list.

Here is the official synopsis for Alicia Vikander’s first Tomb Raider film:

Lara Croft (played by Oscar winner Alicia Vikander) is the fiercely independent daughter of an eccentric adventurer who vanished when she was scarcely a teen. Now a young woman of 21 without any real focus or purpose, Lara navigates the chaotic streets of trendy East London as a bike courier, barely making the rent, and takes college courses, rarely making it to class. Determined to forge her own path, she refuses to take the reins of her father’s global empire just as staunchly as she rejects the idea that he’s truly gone. Advised to face the facts and move forward after seven years without him, even Lara can’t understand what drives her to finally solve the puzzle of his mysterious death.

Going explicitly against his final wishes, she leaves everything she knows behind in search of her dad’s last-known destination: a fabled tomb on a mythical island that might be somewhere off the coast of Japan. But her mission will not be an easy one; just reaching the island will be extremely treacherous. Suddenly, the stakes couldn’t be higher for Lara, who—against the odds and armed with only her sharp mind, blind faith and inherently stubborn spirit—must learn to push herself beyond her limits as she journeys into the unknown. If she survives this perilous adventure, it could be the making of her, earning her the name tomb raider.

Directed by Roar Uthaug, Tomb Raider stars Alicia Vikander, Daniel Wu, Derek Jacobi, Dominic West, Hannah John-Kamen, Kristin Scott, and Walton Goggins.
