After the defamation trial between Amber Heard and Johnny Depp concluded, with the jury finding Depp entitled to over $10 million in damages, Heard’s lawyers have said she cannot pay this amount.

The lengthy defamation trial between Pirates of the Caribbean star Johnny Depp and his ex-wife, Aquaman star Amber Heard, has finally reached a conclusion, with the jury finding Heard had intentionally and maliciously defamed Depp on all three counts that Depp’s legal team had listed. Heard was awarded compensatory damages for just one of the three counts listed in her countersuit over comments made by Depp’s legal team, referring to her allegations as a hoax.

The jury found Johnny Depp was entitled to $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages. This second sum was reduced to $350,000 by Penney Azcarate, due to Virginia’s statutory cap on punitive damages. Amber Heard was awarded $2 million in compensatory damages.

Amber Heard ‘Absolutely Not’ Able To Pay Damages

Following the conclusion of the defamation trial, Amber Heard’s lawyer, Elaine Charlson Bredehoft, has claimed that Heard was “demonized” by Johnny Depp’s legal team during the case. Bredehoft claimed: “A number of things were allowed in this court that should not have been allowed, and it caused the jury to be confused.”

When asked in an interview on Today whether Amber Heard would be able to pay the $10.4 million in damages awarded to Johnny Depp, Bredehoft said “Oh, no, absolutely not.” Bredehoft also cited Depp’s previous case against UK paper The Sun, concerning a headline that referred to him as a “wife beater.” Depp lost that case and Bredehoft pointed out “the court found that Mr. Depp had committed at least 12 acts of domestic violence, including sexual violence against Amber.”

Following the verdict, both Johnny Depp and Amber Heard released statements in response. Heard said “I’m heartbroken that the mountain of evidence still was not enough to stand up to the disproportionate power, influence, and sway of my ex-husband… I’m sad I lost this case. But I am sadder still that I seem to have lost a right I thought I had as an American – to speak freely and openly.” Johnny Depp has said “the jury gave me my life back. I am truly humbled… Truth never perishes.”

The defamation trial between Amber Heard and Johnny Depp was broadcast live on Court TV. The trial was also being live-streamed on Court TV’s website, though it was not available on any other online or streaming platforms.
