First Look At ‘American Assassin’ Screens At CinemaCon

American Assassin

Lionsgate debuted the first official trailer for the upcoming film American Assassin from director Michael Cuesta (Homeland, 12 and Holding) during the studio’s CinemaCon presentation in Las Vegas today.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the first trailer introduces us to Dylan O’Brien as Mitch Rapp, an Arab linguistics student recruited by the CIA whose goal is to kill the terrorists that murdered his girlfriend. Rapp himself goes under the guidance of Cold War veteran Stan Hurley (Michael Keaton).

In order to prove himself, Rapp suggests he and Hurley go hand-to-hand, pointing out that it should only take 20 seconds for Hurley to know whether or not he has what it takes. Instead, Hurley hands Rapp a knife and simply commands Rapp to kill him. Rapp obeys but Hurley quickly disables him and puts the knife to Rapp’s throat.

American Assassin is an adaptation of the novel of the same name from #1 New York Times best-selling author Vince Flynn. Before he passed away from prostate cancer in 2013, Flynn wrote a series of 15 novels featuring the character of Mitch Rapp. While American Assassin was the eleventh entry in the series, the novel introduces the young Rapp on the mission of vengeance that made him a CIA superagent.

The film stars Michael Keaton, Dylan O’Brien, Taylor Kitsch, Sanaa Lathan, Shiva Negar, and Navid Negahban. Here’s the official synopsis:

“American Assassin” follows the rise of Mitch Rapp (Dylan O’Brien) a CIA black ops recruit under the instruction of Cold War veteran Stan Hurley (Michael Keaton). The pair is then enlisted by CIA Deputy Director Irene Kennedy (Sanaa Lathan) to investigate a wave of apparently random attacks on both military and civilian targets. Together the three discover a pattern in the violence leading them to a joint mission with a lethal Turkish agent (Shiva Negar) to stop a mysterious operative (Taylor Kitsch) intent on starting a World War in the Middle East.

American Assassin hits theaters September 15, 2017.
