James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe is getting a new addition, this time focusing on a familiar face from Superman.
The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Dan Perrault and Tony Yacenda, the Emmy-nominated duo behind Netflix’s American Vandal, are developing a Superman spin-off series centered on Jimmy Olsen. Skyler Gisondo played the iconic Daily Planet photographer in Superman and will reprise his role for the series.
Gisondo’s take on Olsen became an unexpected fan favorite in Gunn’s Superman, with audiences praising the actor’s deadpan charm and scene-stealing chemistry with the rest of the Daily Planet team. The spin-off series will reportedly focus on Olsen and a group of fellow reporters as they dive into cases that blur the line between investigative journalism and superpowered chaos.
The Jimmy Olsen series will focus on Gorilla Grodd, but don’t expect Superman and Lois Lane
THR suggests that Superman and Lois Lane won’t appear in the Jimmy Olsen series, though brief cameos haven’t been ruled out. By leaving Clark and Lois out of the spotlight, DC Studios aims to tell more grounded stories from the perspective of those living in Superman’s shadow.
The first season of the Jimmy Olsen series will center on Gorilla Grodd, a telepathic ape who rules the hidden African city of Gorilla City. Grodd has been a major comic book villain since his debut in 1959 and remains one of DC’s more unusual but enduring antagonists.
James Gunn and Peter Safran will executive produce through DC Studios, ensuring the show remains tied to their broader cinematic plans. Galen Vaisman will oversee the project for DC. The series is part of the studio’s continued effort to expand the universe across both film and television.
