Andor showrunner Tony Gilroy is looking to grab the attention of non-Star Wars fans with the upcoming series.
Andor will be the third live-action Star Wars series for Disney Plus, following The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, and Obi-Wan Kenobi. The series takes place during the familiar time period leading up to the Original Trilogy but hopes to tread new ground for the iconic franchise with a spy thriller tone.
How Does Andor Differ From Other Star Wars Shows?
Andor showrunner Tony Gilroy played a major role in Rogue One‘s production, despite not being the biggest Star Wars fan. During the show’s global press conference, Gilroy explained that viewers will be able to enjoy Andor without any prior knowledge of the Star Wars canon:
“Our show is designed so this could be your entry point to ‘Star Wars.’ You can watch our [24 episodes across 2 seasons] and that could be your way in. We’re doing a show that does not require any prior knowledge whatsoever to get involved.”
Tony Gilroy went on to discuss their ambitions with Andor, combining elements of a historical drama with Star Wars signatures:
“Can we satisfy and electrify and excite the dedicated fans and can we at the same time bring […] the smallest intimate drama and the smallest interpersonal relationships that are dropped down in the midst of epic, tectonic revolutionary historical moments where people have to make huge decisions. Can we attract another audience that is interested in that as well, and can we marry those two things together? That’s the gamble, thats what were trying to do and thats why we’re here.”
Here is the synopsis for Andor:
“The “Andor” series will explore a new perspective from the Star Wars galaxy, focusing on Cassian Andor’s journey to discover the difference he can make. The series brings forward the tale of the burgeoning rebellion against the Empire and how people and planets became involved. It’s an era filled with danger, deception and intrigue where Cassian will embark on the path that is destined to turn him into a rebel hero.”
Andor stars Diego Luna, Stellan Skarsgård, Adria Arjona, Fiona Shaw, Denise Gough, Kyle Soller, and Genevieve O’Reilly. Tony Gilroy, Dan Gilroy, Stephen Schiff, and Beau Willimon served as the writers of the Star Wars series while Toby Haynes, Susanna White, and Benjamin Caron directed the episodes.
Andor will premiere Disney Plus on September 21, 2022, with three episodes. Stay tuned for all the latest news on the series, and subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more great video content!
