Who needs Oscar gold when you've made billions?

Andrew Garfield has opened up about why Spider-Man: No Way Home doesn’t need a Best Picture nomination at the Oscars.

Spider-Man: No Way Home welcomed back audiences to barren cinemas after two years of COVID restrictions and woes. While the Omicron variant was surging at the time of release, audiences flocked to their local multiplexes to witness Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire join the silver screen with Tom Holland. The historical cinematic event not only received favorable reviews from critics and audiences alike but has gone on to make over $1.8 billion at the box office – far from chump change.

Disappointment came from the comic book film community when Spider-Man: No Way Home, the biggest film of 2021, didn’t receive a Best Picture nomination at the Academy Awards. Some argued that the Marvel project was responsible for reintroducing audiences to the wonders of theatres so it at least deserved a token nomination, even if the superhero blockbuster doesn’t typically fit the mold of what a “Best Picture” nomination is.

Speaking with The Telegraph, star Andrew Garfield discussed how the film doesn’t need a Best Picture Oscar nomination, despite the film campaigning to do so.

I don’t know, I mean, it’s the sixth biggest movie in the history of movies. Making a film that a gajillion people want to see together is a miracle. Making a film that an awarding body loves is also a miracle. Sometimes those miracles overlap, and sometimes they don’t. But I personally feel pretty satisfied with the audience response. I think that’s plenty.”

While Spider-Man: No Way Home may not be in the running for Oscar gold, it’s received a far greater commodity: tons and tons of money.

Directed by Jon Watts from a script written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, No Way Home stars Tom Holland, Zendaya, Benedict Cumberbatch, Jacob Batalon, Jon Favreau, Jamie Foxx, Willem Dafoe, Alfred Molina, Benedict Wong, Tony Revolori, Marisa Tomei, Andrew Garfield, and Tobey Maguire.

Spider-Man: No Way Home is playing in theaters and available digitally. The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD versions will be available in stores on April 12.
