Andy Serkis is back in the Star Wars universe thanks to Andor, but there’s a twist.
The latest episode of the Disney Plus series Andor featured a surprise appearance by the legendary Andy Serkis. However, Serkis isn’t playing Supreme Leader Snoke here but rather an entirely-new character named Kino Loy.
Who is Kino Loy?
Kino Loy is a prisoner who serves as the manager for Unit Five-Two-D, the Narkina Five prison station where Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) is serving his six-year sentence for being nothing more than a bystander. Wednesday’s Andor episodes sees Kino explaining the work that happens at Unit Five-Two-D to Cassian.
“What I imagined of Kino’s backstory, before he was in prison, was that he was a union leader. He’s used to working as a foreman,” Serkis said during an interview with Vanity Fair. “I wanted him to come from a place where he was put in prison for, perhaps, standing up for workers’ rights, and then put into a position of authority because that’s what he does. He is a natural leader. But he really just wants to serve his time. He’s got a family. He wants to get out and get back, and assumes that that’s going to happen after his incarceration.”
Andy Serkis made his Star Wars debut in The Force: Awakens, playing the villainous Supreme Leader Snoke. He reprised the role for 2018’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi but his return didn’t last long as his character died at the hands of Adam Driver’s Kylo Ren.
Outside of Star Wars, Serkis is an actor, director and producer who’s best known for his performance capture performances, particulary as Gollum in the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit trilogies and as Caesar in the Planet of the Apes reboot series. Most recently, Serkis was seen as Bruce Wayne’s loyal butler Alfred Pennyworth in Matt Reeves-directed The Batman.
