Venom: Let There Be Carnage director Andy Serkis says the Tom Hardy sequel is a love story between the symbiote and its host.

After the success of Venom, Sony brought in acclaimed motion-capture artist turned director to helm the sequel, Let There Be Carnage. After a series of delays, the Venom sequel is finally set to hit cinemas on October 1st. The sequel is set to focus on Eddie Brock’s growing relationship with the Venom symbiote, all the while he tackles Carnage, a sinister symbiote who uses serial killer Cletus Kassady as its host.

One of the first film’s strongest aspects was the budding relationship between the mild-mannered Eddie Brock and the erratic and chaotic Venom symbiote. By the end of the film, both managed to tolerate each other, and the sequel is set to expand upon their relationship. In fact, director Andy Serkis likens their relationship with one another as a “love story”. In the production notes for Venom: Let The Be Carnage (via, revealed that he sees the sequel as a love story between the symbiote and its host.

“The film is a love story – but not the love story you might think … It’s very much about the extraordinary relationship between symbiote and host. Any love affair has its pitfalls, its high points and low points; Venom and Eddie’s relationship absolutely causes problems and stress, and they have a near-hatred for each other. But they have to be with each other – they can’t live without each other. That’s companionship – love – the things that relationships are really about.”

The first trailer for Venom: Let There Be Carnage emphasized just how comfortable (or tolerant) Eddie has gotten with the symbiote as the latter was seen cooking and making a mess in the journalist’s kitchen. Their dynamic together was easily one of the best highlights from the first film, so it’s great to see that Andy Serkis is doubling down on the winning relationship.

Here is the synopsis for Sony’s first Venom film:

The evolution story of Marvel’s most enigmatic, complex and badass character – Venom! Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) is a broken man after he loses everything including his job and fiancée. Just when his life is at its lowest, he becomes host to an alien symbiote which results in extraordinary superpowers – transforming him into Venom. Will these powers be enough for this new lethal protector to defeat great evil forces, especially against the far stronger and more weaponized symbiote rival, Riot?

Directed by Ruben Fleischer from a script written by Jeff Pinkner & Scott Rosenberg and Kelly Marcel, Venom stars Tom Hardy, Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed, Scott Haze, Reid Scott, Jenny Slate, Ron Cephas Jones, and Woody Harrelson.

Venom is available on Digital HD, 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD, while Let There Be Carnage will hit theaters on October 1.
