Anthony Mackie originally wanted a Donald Trump reference in the finale of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier but the idea was shot down.
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Marvel’s second episodic venture on Disney Plus, wrapped up in late April by showing Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson taking on the mantle of Captain America. Near the end of the finale, when Wilson formally introduces himself as Captain America to the entire world, the character makes a lengthy speech advocating for peace and tolerance. Despite being quite on the nose, the speech made for one of the series’ highlights and confirmed that this iteration of Captain America would certainly lean in on the current political climate. Mackie wanted to lean even more into the contentious political climate that mires America by referencing Donald Trump but that it was shot down.
Speaking at Marvel and Disney’s Drive-In For Your Consideration event, Anthony Mackie touched on his lengthy monologue and what inspired it, confirming that he also helped write it. Variety was on hand to record Mackie’s comments, including his story on how his Donald Trump reference got shot down.
โWith all of the protests and everything that went on in 2020, there were just as many Brown people as Black people as white people as Asian people. Everyone,ย everyone in this country at this time wants to see a change, and that monologue sums that up a beautiful way.”
โOne thing I wanted to put at the end of the monologue โ and it got shot down โ was if weโre going to โmake America great again,โ it has to be done by Americans. And no matter what your race, creed, color or sexuality is, youโre an American. And thatโs what I think the new Captain America captures.โ
Do you think the Donald Trump reference should have been kept in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier? Or was it better left scrapped? Comment below and let us know!
