‘Aquaman’ Eyes $200M International Gross A Week Before It Hits North America

Aquaman James Wan The TrenchEven before Aquaman makes a splash in North America just in time for the holidays, the film is already set to hit past the $200 million mark in international totals much of which is thanks to its incredible run in China.

On Friday December 14, the James Wan-directed film set in the DC Extended Universe opened to more markets that include Mexico, Russia and Brazil among others and brought in another $27 million overseas, pushing the current international totals to $179.1 million. It is expected that Aquaman will easily swim past the $200 million international mark by the end of the weekend.

In particular, Friday saw the China grosses drop only 45% from its opening day. This pushes Aquaman to become the second highest-grossing Warner Bros. film in China and the biggest DC film of all-time there.

Critical word-of-mouth for Aquaman has been mixed yet mostly positive with the film currently holding in at a steady 70% on Rotten Tomatoes – only the second film in the DCEU to have a “Fresh” percentage rating alongside Wonder Woman. As the film continues to perform well at the box office, a heavy tidal wave of excitement continues to build up before it makes a splash in North America and beyond.

Here is a plot synopsis for the film:

From Warner Bros. Pictures and director James Wan comes an action-packed adventure that spans the vast, visually breathtaking underwater world of the seven seas, “Aquaman,” starring Jason Momoa in the title role. The film reveals the origin story of half-human, half-Atlantean Arthur Curry and takes him on the journey of his lifetime—one that will not only force him to face who he really is, but to discover if he is worthy of who he was born to be… a king.

Directed by James Wan, Aquaman stars Jason Momoa as Arthur Curry, Amber Heard as Mera, Willem Dafoe as Vulko, Patrick Wilson as Orm / Ocean Master, Dolph Lundgren as Nereus, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta, Nicole Kidman as Atlanna, Ludi Lin as Captain Murk, and Temuera Morrison as Tom Curry.

Aquaman will be released in theaters on December 21, 2018.
