‘Aquaman’ Is King Of The U.S. Box Office With $72.1 Million Opening

Aquaman ruled the U.S. box office in its opening weekend with an estimated $67 million, bringing its domestic total to $72.1 million.

The highly-anticipated DC solo adventure Aquaman has finally opened in U.S. theaters. Before arriving in the U.S., the film had already earned over $300 million overseas and now it’s total sits at over $400 million thanks to domestic ticket sales. A new report from The Wrap revealed that during its first weekend of release in the U.S., Aquaman earned $67.4 million. When Wednesday night preview screenings, as well as Amazon Prime preview screenings, are taken into account the film’s total is raised to $72.1 million, earning the top spot at the domestic box office this weekend by a longshot.

Worldwide, this brings the film’s total gross to around $410 million, far surpassing any of the other holiday releases such as Bumblebee and Mary Poppins Returns. Due to its early release and success overseas, Aquaman was making headlines since before it even held preview screenings in U.S. theaters. Fans might notice that the $72.1 million that the film has amassed in the U.S. is pretty far below the $93.8 million earned by Justice League in its opening weekend last year.

This box office drop isn’t a shock due to the competition Aquaman had to face in its opening weekend, which was significantly higher than the competition Justice League faced when it opened. Christmas is arriving very soon and this gives Aquaman plenty of time to thrive at the holiday box office, much like films such as Avatar, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, and the recent Star Wars films have done in the past.
