Spoilers For Aquaman To Follow
In what might be the film’s biggest twists, it turns out that Aquaman’s mother, Atlanna, did not, in fact, die.
In Aquaman’s backstory his mother, Atlanna, left the ocean for the surface world in order to escape an arranged marriage before falling in love with a lighthouse keeper and having a son. Sometime later she was taken back to Atlantis against her will, leaving her fate unknown. That was before Aquaman’s mentor, Vulko, revealed that she had been sacrificed to a race known as The Trench and was presumed dead. Later on in the film, however, it was revealed that this was not the case. As it had turned out, she had survived her encounter with the monsters and had set about trying to retrieve the Trident that our protagonists were after.
Traditionally in DC Comics, Atlanna dies before Aquaman comes of age. In the Pre-Crisis Universe of DC comics, the character died of an unspecified illness. In the Post-Crisis Universe, she died while in captivity. It seems in this version, however, the writers wanted to give her character a bigger role in the plot.
What did you all make of this change? Were you happy to see that Atlanna survived her apparent death? Would it have been better if they stuck to the comics? Let us know what you think in the comments below!
