Aquaman director James Wan recently spoke about a scene that was “too out there” to film.
Speaking with Collider, Wan talked about a scene from co-writer Will Beall’s original script where Arthur Curry was caught by King Orm in a prison guarded by sharks. The way Aquaman escaped was supposed to be really crazy. Take a look at what the director had to say about it:
“He had a really quirky out-there [sequence]…it wasn’t the studio, it was me that said, ‘I don’t know if we can have that in there, that’s a bit weird.’ As much as I loved it. He had this sequence where…Aquaman has been apprehended by King Orm and he’s been thrown into this dungeon. Like this really awful prison deep in Atlantis. He ends up starting a prison riot, where all the guards are sharks. They were shark-guards, like all shark head…and he kills one of the shark guards and the shark starts bleeding and then that starts a feeding frenzy among all the other shark guards. It just went nuts. We’re talking like clouds of blood billowing everywhere and he uses that to escape. I was like “Holy crap, I don’t know if I can do that.”
It’s a shame we didn’t get to see this bonkers scene in Aquaman. It seems that it was a great idea put forward by co-writer Will Beall, but one that Wan couldn’t translate into the movie, perhaps for the better of it. Directors often choose to leave scenes out of movies because it makes them too long or because they don’t add anything new to the film. In this interview, James Wan also spoke of a cut scene where the movie explained how Arthur Curry discovered how he could breathe underwater, after being part of a dare in his school. Perhaps we’ll see it, and other scenes, in the Aquaman Blu-ray next year.
From Warner Bros. Pictures and director James Wan comes an action-packed adventure that spans the vast, visually breathtaking underwater world of the seven seas, “Aquaman,” starring Jason Momoa in the title role. The film reveals the origin story of half-human, half-Atlantean Arthur Curry and takes him on the journey of his lifetime—one that will not only force him to face who he really is, but to discover if he is worthy of who he was born to be… a king.
Directed by James Wan, Aquaman stars Jason Momoa as Arthur Curry, Amber Heard as Mera, Willem Dafoe as Vulko, Patrick Wilson as Orm / Ocean Master, Dolph Lundgren as Nereus, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta, Nicole Kidman as Atlanna, Ludi Lin as Captain Murk, and Temuera Morrison as Tom Curry.
Aquaman will be released in theaters on December 21, 2018.
