The CW’s Arrow is set to wrap up its eighth and final season with an abbreviated number of episodes.
The news that the upcoming eighth season of Arrow would be the last came from star Stephen Amell himself via Twitter earlier today. In his tweet, Amell also confirmed that season eight would consist entirely of just ten episodes.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, CW president Mark Pedowitz explains that Arrow was canceled in order to accommodate The CW’s next generation of superhero television:
“Things will age and we want to get the next generation of shows to keep The CW DC universe going for as long as possible.”
Of course, the growing roster of superhero series on The CW owes their existence to Arrow. The show eventually became so popular that the network was able to spin off a number of different franchises similarly derived from the DC Comics pantheon, including The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, Black Lightning and the upcoming series Batwoman. In fact, many fans refer to the shared universe that these shows take place in as “The Arrowverse,” recognizing where everything started, with a simple bow and arrow.
