‘Arrow’ EP Says Season 6 Villain Will Be The ‘Biggest Of All Big Bads’

Last season of Arrow pit the emerald archer against the ruthless Prometheus, a serial killer with a personal vendetta against Oliver Queen. In an interview with ComicBook.com at San Diego Comic-Con, executive producers Wendy Mericle and Marc Guggenheim discussed how they planned to top the sinister Prometheus with their main villain for season six.

Guggenheim commented on the challenging of creating a threat that exceeds the previous enemy:

“How do we top Prometheus? I ask myself that question every day. I’m a big believer that you always try to swing for the fences. At the same time, the more you make it about the fence swinging the more you take your eye off the ball. I think a big part of Arrow is, every year to varying degrees we always put the characters through some kind of grinder. What made Prometheus’ character — apart from Josh [Segura’s] incredible performance — was we really put Oliver through the meat grinder.”

Mericle offered a brief tease indicating that the season six villain will be Oliver’s greatest foe yet:

“It’s going to be the biggest of all big bads, I can say that.”

Guggenheim added:

“I’m going to be very cagey about that one, sorry. We’ve got some pretty cool meat grinder moments planned for the season. Hopefully we’ll be here next year and you guys will be asking, ‘How do you top so and so?’ The big creative choice that we made was, this year, the consequences have to be felt not just by Oliver but by the entire team. That’s a big part of the engine that drives Season 6.”

After a violent shipwreck, billionaire playboy Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) was missing and presumed dead for five years before being discovered alive on a remote island in the North China Sea. He returned home to Star City, bent on righting the wrongs done by his family and fighting injustice. As the Green Arrow, he protects his city with the help of former soldier John Diggle (David Ramsey), computer-science expert Felicity Smoak (Emily Bett Rickards), his vigilante-trained sister Thea Queen (Willa Holland), Deputy Mayor Quentin Lance (Paul Blackthorne), brilliant inventor Curtis Holt (Echo Kellum), and his new recruits, street-savvy Rene Ramirez (Rick Gonzalez) and meta-human Dinah Drake (Juliana Harkavy). Oliver has finally solidified and strengthened his crime-fighting team only to have it threatened when unexpected enemies from his past return to Star City, forcing Oliver to rethink his relationship with each member of his “family”

Arrow Season 6 will premiere on Thursday, October 12 at 9:00 pm ET on The CW. The complete fifth season will be available on Blu-Ray and DVD on September 19.
