Sigourney Weaver is one of the biggest icons in all of sci-fi and action movie history. The Academy Award-nominated actress is obviously recognized for her iconic role as Ripley from the Alien franchise and also had a role in James Cameron’s Avatar – a film that remains as the highest grossing film of all-time at the global box office.
Avatar hit theaters in 2009 and despite its astronomical success, Cameron and company have spent nearly a decade developing four sequels that won’t hit the big screen until the end of this decade or the beginning of the 2020’s.
However, Avatar 2 and 3 were undergoing principal photography since Fall 2017 and have since wrapped. Weaver recently spoke with THR about the upcoming films, having wrapped production on the first two sequels and has also revealed that work on 4 and 5 is already well underway.
Weaver was asked about Neill Blomkamp’s proposed Alien movie that has remained in Development Hell for quite sometime. In her answer, she revealed that she’s quite tied to Avatar 4 and 5, which would conflict with Blomkamp’s schedule that is currently tied to projects different from Alien:
“We almost started to do it when I was working with James Cameron. But by the time we were put off by Fox, Neill had gotten so many jobs that we’d have to wait probably. I’m busy doing Avatar 4 and 5. I love working with Neill and I think he’d do a terrific job, and James Cameron really thinks it’s a great idea, so you never know. Right now, I think Neill’s got like three projects going at once.”
Weaver won’t be reprising her character Dr. Grace Augustine from the first film, given that she gets killed off. Instead, she will be playing a different character for the next four sequels. She will be joining fellow cast members Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, CCH Pounder, Cliff Curtis, Kate Winslet, Stephen Lang, Giovanni Ribisi and David Thewlis.
Avatar 2 is set to hit theaters on December 18, 2020.
