Avengers star Chris Evans has revealed that he won’t be playing Captain America again because he left the role on a high note.
Chris Evans officially retired from the role of Captain Americ in Avengers: Endgame, a film that also saw the end of Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man. Everyone was, of course, disappointed that both of the Avengers stars retired from their respective roles but it was a long time coming. Endgame served as the perfect farewell for all of the characters who passed away or retired, especially Captain America. Despite how intriguing it would be to see Evans return as Captain America for future MCU movies, the star has revealed why he won’t be returning to the role.
In his recent appearance on The Graham Norton Show, Chris Evans was asked if he really was done playing Captain America. The star replied that Avengers: Endgame was truly his end as the character, going into detail why.
“It was a great run and we went out on such a high note that it would be risky to revisit it in my opinion. It was such a good experience and I think it’s better left that way.”
Chris Evans continued by discussing how a proper ending to Captain America’s journey was a long time coming and he was pleased that Endgame gave his character the finale it deserved.
“It’s not a hard no, but it’s not an eager yes either. I think Cap had such a tricky act to stick the landing, and I think they did a really nice job letting him complete his journey.
At the end of Avengers: Endgame, Captain America traveled back in time to live a life of peace with Peggy, something he’s wanted ever since we saw him on the big screen. Chris Evans continued by saying that if he were to return to the role, it’d have to be for some monumental reason.
“If you’re going to revisit it, it can’t be a cash grab. It can’t be just because the audience wants to be excited. What are we revealing? What are we adding to the story? A lot of things would have to come together.”
There are plenty of ways to see Captain America return to the big screen, such as time travel, but they all seem gimmicky at the moment considering Chris Evans just left the role. Decades from now, it’d be interesting to see Evans return to the role if the creatives find a way to see his character return in a meaningful way. At the moment, it’s best to leave both the character and actor at peace. Who knows, maybe Evans will be itching to becoming our favorite patriot in a couple years once the MCU continues to expand?
