Warning: The following post contains spoilers on the fate of Chris Evans’ Captain America in Avengers: Endgame!

During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Avengers: Endgame directors Anthony and Joe Russo answered some questions about Captain America’s fate.

Avengers: Endgame concluded with Chris Evans’ Captain America traveling back in time to return the Infinity Stones the team collected in the past to reverse Thanos’ decimation, thus keeping the timeline intact. However, while Captain America was supposed to return to the present after his mission was complete, the first Avenger opted to remain in the past and live out his life with Peggy Carter before returning as an old man to pass his shield on to Sam Wilson/Falcon.

While most consider this to be a fitting conclusion to Captain America’s story, the decision did raise questions about whether or not Steve Rogers had been living in the past all along. However, Avengers: Endgame co-director Joe Russo explained that Chris Evans’ Captain America had actually lived in an alternate timeline before returning to the main Marvel Cinematic Universe we’ve been following:

“If Cap were to go back into the past and live there, he would create a branched reality. The question then becomes, how is he back in this reality to give the shield away?”

Joe Russo added that there may be a story to explain how Chris Evans’ Captain America was able to return to his original dimension:

“Interesting question, right? Maybe there’s a story there. There’s a lot of layers built into this movie and we spent three years thinking through it, so it’s fun to talk about it and hopefully fill in holes for people so they understand what we’re thinking”

The filmmaking duo also confirmed that Bucky Barnes was aware of Captain America’s plan to remain in the past, which is why he gives Sam Wilson/Falcon the chance to the speak to Steve Rogers when he returns as an older man.
