Avengers: Endgame writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely commented on theory suggesting old Captain America attended Peggy Carter’s funeral in Civil War.
Captain America’s decision to remain in the past and live out his life with Peggy Carter after returning the Infinity Stones to the point they were taken created some confusion among fans. While some concluded Captain America’s decision to stay behind created an alternate timeline, others believe two Captain America’s existed in the main MCU universe.
Those in the second group developed a theory that old Captain America attended Peggy Carter’s funeral in Civil War and the Avengers: Endgame writers addressed this idea during an interview with the Los Angeles Times. While Christopher Markus stated that he would love for that theory to be accurate, there is currently no official explanation for how Captain America’s time-traveling adventure affects the rest of the MCU:
“I would very much like that. There is no set explanation for Cap’s time travel.”
Markus then explained why he loves the idea of there being two Captain America’s in the MCU this whole time, particularly when it comes to Peggy Carter’s funeral:
“I mean, we’ve had public disagreements with [directors Anthony and Joe Russo] about what it necessarily means [laughs], but I love the idea of there being two Steve Rogers in the timeline. One who lived a long life with Peggy and is in the background of that funeral scene watching his young self carry his wife’s coffin up. Not just for the time travel mumbo jumbo of it, but for the just weird, personal pain and satisfaction that would be happening between two Steve Rogers there. I kind of love it.”
