Avengers: Endgame Directors Explain What Happened When Captain America Went Back In Time

Avengers Endgame Captain America Chris Evans

With Avengers: Endgame returning for a special re-release this weekend featuring six new minutes of bonus footage, The Russo Brothers are making the press rounds and have finally given a definitive explanation for what happened to Chris Evans’ Captain America when he traveled back in time at the end of the film.

Chris Evans’ Captain America got his happy ending when he decided to remain in the past after he returned the Infinity Stones to their places in time. After the hero lived his life out and grew old with Peggy Carter, Chris Evans’ Captain America shocked fans when his character returned at Iron Man’s funeral as an older man and passed on his shield to Anthony Mackie’s Falcon. Since the film was released, there’s been a major disconnect between the film’s directors — who say Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers was living in an alternate universe — while writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely said the boy scout was still living in same Marvel Cinematic Universe we’ve known all along.

But speaking to FOX 5 DC, Anthony and Joe Russo brought an end to the debate, clarifying the specifics of what really happened when Chris Evans’ Captain America stayed back in time:

JOE: “The way that it would work is that when Captain America goes back, he would create a branch reality. Now he would exist in that branch reality with a second Captain America who was frozen in ice.”

ANTHONY: “Peggy understood that he was dead at that point in the storytelling because Cap went back to a point in time where nobody knew he still was alive, frozen in ice.”

JOE: “Now what’s also a story for another time is, of course, if he created a branch reality, he would then have to use a Pym Particle to come back to this reality to hand that shield off.”

Chris Evans can last been seen as Captain America in Avengers: Endgame. Here’s the official synopsis:

The grave course of events set in motion by Thanos that wiped out half the universe and fractured the Avengers ranks compels the remaining Avengers to take one final stand in Marvel Studios’ grand conclusion to twenty-two films, “Avengers: Endgame.”

Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, Avengers:Endgame stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo,  Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Don Cheadle, Paul Rudd, Brie Larson, Karen Gillan, Danai Gurira, Benedict Wong, Jon Favreau, Bradley Cooper, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Josh Brolin.
