Avengers: Endgame co-directors Anthony and Joe Russo sat down with Heroic Hollywood Editor-In-Chief Umberto Gonzalez and weighed in on the many fan theories about the Marvel Studios film.
Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Endgame a little over one week away from hitting theaters and in the years leading up to the highly-anticipated conclusion to the Infinity Saga, fans have developed their own theories on how the journey should unfold. However, co-directors Anthony and Joe Russo noted that they have not seen a fan theory that accurately predicted the outcome of Endgame:
“Surprisingly, no. I mean, there are some theories that can kind of get a little close. But I think here … If you look at it, a fan theory is typically like a few sentences long. It’s a very brief kind of projection of what’s gonna happen.”
The Russo Brothers added that while some fans have gotten close, others have been “wildly” off:
“[…] they tend to get summarized into something very simple. And it’s like the devil is really in the details, right? It’s that … Sometimes things can kinda get in the same area, but they’re not … Sometimes they’re wildly not in the same area. The interesting thing is there are very sort of savvy fans who can kind of get close to the mark or can kind of miss it wildly because that’s the process we go through.”
The filmmakers also discussed why anyone outside of the writer’s room, where several ideas are tossed around and discarded, couldn’t accurately predict the outcome of the entire film:
“The story can go in so many different directions. We ended up just settling on a very specific direction for very specific reasons that nobody outside of that room could ever guess at. So no-one’s ever going to be able to predict that exactly what is happening.”
