‘Avengers: Endgame’ Director Confirms Hulk’s Arm Injury Is Permanent

During a live Q&A hosted by ComicBook.com’s Brandon Davis, Avengers: Endgame co-director Joe Russo confirmed the arm injury Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk sustained is permanent.

Avengers: Endgame followed our heroes as they traveled to the past in an attempt to retrieve the Infinity Stones before Thanos had them destroyed. Once they completed their mission, Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk opted to be the one to harness their power using a gauntlet Tony Stark created so he could bring back everyone who was erased from existence by Thanos. While Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk was successful and Thanos was later vanquished, the surge of energy created by the stones caused damage to his arm that Avengers: Endgame co-director Joe Russo confirmed is permanent:

“He’s lost an arm. He lost Natasha. That’s not coming back. He’s damaged himself. I don’t know. It’s interesting. That’s permanent damage, the same way that it was permanent damage with Thanos. It’s irreversible damage. His arm, if you noticed, is a lot skinnier. It’s blackened. So, he loses a lot of strength there.”

However, Joe Russo acknowledged that Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk could find someone who can repair the damage:

“But who knows? There’s a lot of smart people left. Maybe someone helps him repair that. Maybe someone gives him a new arm. I have no idea where that character goes from here. The nice thing is we didn’t have to pay attention to where it goes after this, we just try to tell a satisfying ending.”
