‘Avengers: Endgame’ Wins Third Weekend At Box Office Over ‘Detective Pikachu’

Avengers Endgame Pokemon Detective Pikachu

After two record-breaking weekends, Avengers: Endgame continues to remain on top at the box office. The Marvel epic went unchallenged for its first two weeks until the release of the first-ever live-action Pokemon film, Detective Pikachu starring Ryan Reynolds this weekend.

Avengers: Endgame, which is already the second highest-grossing film of all time as well as the fastest film to cross the $2 billion milestone in history, managed a total of $63.1 million in its third weekend at the domestic box office, bringing its domestic total to $723.5 million. The fourth Avengers film has become the third highest grossing film at the domestic box office, behind only Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($936.6M) and Avatar ($760.5M). The film has already earned over $2.4 billion worldwide. Whether or not it will pass Avatar ($2.78B) to become the highest-grossing film of all time still remains in question.

Pokemon Detective Pikachu debuted to $58 million in its opening weekend at the domestic box office. The film has received mostly positive reviews, currently sitting at a fresh 63% on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, while also receiving an A- CinemaScore. The film follows Tim Goodman (Justice Smith) when his father is mysteriously killed, leading to a team-up with Pikachu (Ryan Reynolds) in order to discover the truth behind his father’s supposed death. Rob Letterman (Goosebumps) is directed the Pokemon film from a script written by Nicole Perlman (Guardians of The Galaxy) and Alex Hirsch (Gravity Falls).

Avengers: Endgame serves as both a follow up to Avengers: Infinity War as well as the conclusion to the 22 films that came before Marvel officially ends Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Spider-Man: Far From Home in July.

Here is the plot synopsis for Avengers: Endgame:

The grave course of events set in motion by Thanos that wiped out half the universe and fractured the Avengers ranks compels the remaining Avengers to take one final stand in Marvel Studios’ grand conclusion to twenty-two films, “Avengers: Endgame.”
