Here’s How ‘Avengers: Endgame’s Writers Dealt With Black Widow’s Solo Film

Avengers Endgame Scarlett Johansson Black Widow

It seems that even in a well-oiled machine like the Marvel Cinematic Universe some things slip through the cracks as it seems that the writers of Avengers: Endgame did not factor in the upcoming Black Widow film while writing the studio’s latest hit.

MAJOR SPOILERS FOR AVENGERS: ENDGAME TO FOLLOW

One of Avengers: Endgame‘s surprise deaths was the demise of Scarlet Johannson’s Black Widow. A longtime member of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Black Widow made her first appearance in Iron Man 2 before becoming a main member of the Avengers and one of Captain America’s closest friends and allies. Sadly she met her end in Avengers: Endgame in the effort to retrieve the Soul Stone from the past. And it seems like someone forgot to tell the film’s writers that a solo film for the character was happening.

During a recent interview with Comicbook.com Avengers: Endgame writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely spoke at length about the decision to kill off Black Widow and how they factored in the upcoming Black Widow film into that decision. Based on what Markus says, it seems like it didn’t really factor in at all:

We weren’t fully aware of [the Black Widow movie], but, even when that became clearer that it was one of the things that they were intending to do, no one told us not to do what we were doing.

McFeely then fully explained the thought process behind Black Widow’s death and does not mention the upcoming film at all:

Right, and that’s function of her arc, right? Her finally finding a purpose, a family, and being willing to sacrifice everything for that family. I think of her as perhaps the strongest person in the whole movie. She’s the woman on the wall in the five years. And even when Captain America has doubts, and remember he says to her, ‘Maybe we don’t need to be doing this.’ She does not share that opinion.

So, then when she gets to Vormir and is faced with this choice, it is what she’s been working toward for a full five years, is to get that sense of family back, to get all these people back. And you’ll just put yourself in our spot too. We had created these rules, whereby you’re going to have to sacrifice someone that you love in order to get the soul stone. So, in terms of candidates to go to Vormir, Hawkeye and Widow were sort of the only ones that would make sense, and hopefully would tear your heart out.

From the look of things, the writers were more interested in telling their own story then worrying about any upcoming Marvel films!

What do you all make of this? Based on Avengers: Endgame, what kind of film will the Black Widow movie be? Let us know what you think in the comments below!
