With Avengers: Infinity War in the rearview and Endgame just a couple months away, Directors Anthony and Joe Russo are speaking candidly about what they would change about the process of shooting both films back-to-back.
Speaking to CinemaBlend, the directors were asked to reflect on the whole ordeal now that they are one year removed from it. What would the Russo Brothers have done differently? Their response:
“We wouldn’t shoot them back-to-back. [Laughs]”
The pair has definitely been feeling the weight of carrying two enormous Avengers movies through to their… Well, endgame. The Russo Brothers would have liked to have more time Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame.
Having more time would have given the directors more time to assess any feedback from Avengers: Infinity War and apply corrections to Endgame. Shooting them one right after the other unfortunately mean the Russo Brothers were already too far into the process, which forced them to take it on faith alone that audiences would receive Infinity War well. Anthony Russo elaborates:
“I think the challenge for all of us was finding the balance between the two films. Because each film is so complex on its own that sometimes considering both of them was a bit overwhelming. So we looked for opportunities in the process to separate the two so that our brains could be fully focused on the narrative. While the films have a connection, as the Marvel films do, they are distinct stories.”
It definitely sounds like a lot to take on all at once. How was the payoff? Well, Avengers: Infinity War received mostly glowing reviews from audiences and critics alike and took in a worldwide haul of $2.048 billion. While we still have to wait a little longer for Endgame, so far it appears that the Russo Brothers’ process has been gold.
A culmination of 22 interconnected films the fourth installment of the Avengers saga will draw audiences to witness the turning point of this epic journey. Our beloved heroes will truly understand how fragile this reality is and the sacrifices that must be made to uphold it.
Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, Avengers: Endgame is expected to star Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Benedict Cumberbatch, Don Cheadle, Tom Holland, Chadwick Boseman, Paul Bettany, Elizabeth Olsen, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Danai Gurira, Letitia Wright, Dave Bautista, Zoe Saldana, Paul Rudd, Jeremy Renner, Brie Larson, Josh Brolin and Chris Pratt.
Avengers: Endgame is scheduled to be released in theaters on April 26, 2019.

After the mid-credits scene for Ant-Man and the Wasp, many were theorizing that the Avengers would have to rescue Scott Lang from the Quantum Realm and subsequently use the alternate dimension to travel back in time to defeat Thanos. While it appears Scott Lang managed to escape on his own, he may have brought the van containing the way to the Quantum Realm to the Avengers’ front door.

While the Hulk was absent from the first Avengers: Endgame trailer, Bruce Banner managed to make a brief appearance. The brilliant scientist could be seen assessing the list of casualties of Thanos’ decimation and it has clearly taken an emotional toll.
