Avengers: Infinity War co-director Joe Russo took part in a Q&A at a high school in Iowa, and responded to a question by a student about Joss Whedon’s decision to pair up Bruce Banner and Natasha Romanoff. While the Infinity War directing duo wasn’t involved in the decision, Joe Russo mentioned that he and his brother Anthony support it. Here’s what he had to say:

“Why go see the films when you know how it’s going to end? And it isn’t a translation. It’s our interpretation for the MCU — I think Joss was trying to find interesting ways of pairing up the characters and create dynamics between them. I know it seems to be a generally unpopular choice; you know you can’t win them all.”

The student pointed out that the relationship does not occur in the comic books, but it is clear that although the comic book origins of these Avengers characters are important to the directors, their main focus remains on telling the best story they can — even if it means deviating from the books.
