‘Avengers: Infinity War’ Co-Screenwriter On Thanos’ Plan & Motivation

'Avengers' Infinity War' co-screenwriter Stephen McFeely shares new details on the motivation behind Thanos master plan to collect the Infinity Stones.

Avengers: Infinity War will be the culmination of the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe story as our heroes face off against the Mad Titan, Thanos. While comic book fans are familiar with the powerful villain’s story and motivation, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has created a different set of circumstances and history for screenwriters to work with, meaning they will only be able to adapt so much from the classic comic storyline. Now, Avengers: Infinity War co-screenwriter revealed some minor details on the motivation behind the screen version of Thanos’ master plan.

In new bonus material featured on the home video release of Doctor Strange, McFeely explained the motivation behind Thanos mission to collect the Infinity Stones.

“His goal is to re-balance the universe as he sees it. So when he figures out that the Infinity Stones could do this for him at the snap of a finger, that becomes his main goal.”

In the comics, Thanos’ plans are often efforts to win the affection of Death, who takes on the physical appearance of woman whom Thanos has fallen in love with. While Death has yet to appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, fans have been speculating the character, or a stand-in for her, will be the primary motive for Thanos’ mission ever since ‘courting death’ was hinted as a reason for the Mad Titan to challenge The Avengers.

While McFeely did not mention Death as being the reason for Thanos’ mission, it is possible that his plan to “re-balance” the universe will stem from a desire to please a love interest. With Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige recently stating that Thanos will be the main character in Avengers: Infinity War, it is likely that new details and characters from Thanos life will be introduced to offer more insight into the villain’s motivations.

Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, Avengers: Infinity War will be released in theaters on May 3, 2018.
