‘Avengers’ Star Ross Marquand Teases Red Skull’s Return

Avengers Endgame Ross Marquand Red Skull

Avengers: Endgame star Ross Marquand has teased that Red Skull could potentially return in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Fans were surprised to see Red Skull return to the MCU in Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, where the villain was played by Ross Marquand, who took over duties from Hugo Weaving. As the keeper of the Soul Stone, Red Skull had to patiently wait on Vormir for a sacrifice to take place. In both films, the requisites for the sacrifices were made by Thanos and Black Widow respectively, allowing Ross Marquand’s Red Skull to seemingly be relinquished of his duties.

In a recent interview with Nerds4Life, Avengers star Ross Marquand discussed how it’s entirely possible for Red Skull to be back on Earth, assuming the role of Johann Schmidt once again.

“Directors Anthony and Joe Russo said once the Red Skull is released of the Soul Stone, once Thanos gets it and then once Hawkeye gets it, he’s essentially free. But if we think about it, there’s all these different multiverses now. So in one multiverse, when Thanos frees him, he’s free. I would imagine the first thing he would do if he still has a vendetta, or if any part of him still has ambition, would go back to Earth.”

“Maybe he wants to enact revenge, maybe he wants to keep his diabolical plan going. Or maybe he doesn’t care at all. I imagine when you’re graced with infinite wisdom, you’re also graced, or cursed, with infinite pain and suffering. So he’s probably, I would imagine on one level, he’s over it. He doesn’t need to conquer anybody, because he’s unliving”

It would certainly be interesting to see Red Skull as a celestial, stoic being that merely observes how life in the universe goes along. The way Ross Marquand describes the character is similar to the prerogative of The Eternals, albeit they are known to intervene. The Avengers star also discussed if he’s had talks to return to the MCU.

“I haven’t, but I would jump at the chance to do it again. I think that role obviously belongs to Hugo, he is the person that originated it and I loved what he did with that. If his heart is in a different place and he no longer wants to return, I would truly again be honored to play that character again.”

Ross Marquand’s Red Skull played a small but understated role in the final two Phase 3 Avengers films by giving us a completely different take on the red menace. While Hugo Weaving portrayed Red Skull with violent tenacity, Ross Marquand’s iteration was more calm and centred, a by-product of being reckoned to one planet. Ross Marquand isn’t explicit regarding his return to the character of Red Skull but he sure does have an idea as to where the Avengers: Endgame character could go.
