Raya and the Last Dragon star Awkwafina revealed what made her connect with her character, Sisu, in the upcoming film.
Although many fans will be excited to see Awkwafina star opposite Simu Liu in Marvel Studios’ Shang-Chi, she’ll first appear in Disney’s Raya and the Last Dragon next to Kelly Marie Tran. Her character Sisu will play a vital role in reuniting the divided nation of Kumandra alongside Raya. Although it won’t be easy, Awkwafina revealed that the dragon is incredibly optimistic, which is one of the things that drew her to the role.
Awkwafina’s previous roles in films like The Farewell or Crazy Rich Asians proves that she can handle the delicate balance between comedy and drama, but her character in Raya and the Last Dragon also has an inspirational spark to her that the actress thinks will offer an important message to audiences. Awkwafina explained that although Sisu believes in herself, she’s also surprised at what she can do, and the message viewers should take away from the film is that perfection isn’t always the answer.
“I definitely connect with Sisu. She has optimism, she has hope and she even has belief in herself—but really to her surprise. I love her because she isn’t perfect, and I think that’s a strong message to send to everyone: We don’t have to be perfect.”
