Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings star Awkwafina has responded to the cultural appropriation accusations that have come her way.

The last few years have been fantastic for Awkwafina. Not only did the star make her Marvel debut in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, but she also appeared in Disney’s animated hit Raya and the Last Dragon. Outside of the Disney/Marvel machine, the rapper/actor has appeared as a fictionalized version of herself on Awkwafina Is Nora from Queens, a show she both executive produces and co-runs.

Awkwafina’s talent is undeniable as she continues to become one of Hollywood’s most sought-after stars, whether it be for big-budget projects like Shang-Chi or intimate dramas like The Farewell, which continues to leave audiences in tears. As the star continues to rise, so has the backlash against the actor’s use of African American Vernacular English (AAVE) as an artist. Awkwafina has prominently utilized AAVE during her performances as a rapper and has continued the practice during her time on screen.

As criticism continued to grow louder, Awkwafina took to social media to address the cultural appropriation accusations. The star will also be taking a lengthy social media break as suggested by her therapist.

Here is the synopsis for Awkwafina’s Marvel Studios film:

“Simu Liu stars as Shang-Chi in Marvel Studios’ Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Shang-Chi must confront the past he thought he left behind when he is drawn into the web of the mysterious Ten Rings organization.”

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton from a script written by David Callaham, the film stars Simu Liu, Awkwafina, Meng’er Zhang, Fala Chen, Florian Munteanu, Benedict Wong, Michelle Yeoh, Ben Kingsley and Tony Leung.
