‘Blade Runner’ Sequel Adds ‘Captain Phillips’ Star Barkhad Abdi

The cast of the yet-to-be titled Blade Runner sequel continues to grow as Entertainment Weekly reports that Academy Award nominee Barkhad Abdi is the latest addition to the cast of the movie. As per usual, there’s no word on who the actor is playing.

Abdi, who is best known for his work in Paul Greengrass’ Captain Phillips, joins a cast which so far includes Harrison Ford, Ryan Gosling, Robin Wright, Dave Bautista, Mackenzie Davis, Ana de Armas, Carla Juri and Sylvia Hoeks. The Alcon Entertainment project will begin filming next month under the direction of Sicario and Prisoners helmer Denis Villeneuve.

Plot details are being kept under wraps, but Meet The Movie Press host Jeff Sneider recently revealed the following details on an episode of Heroic Insider:

“I found it interesting how Gosling jumped Ford in the press releases from Alcon. He’s positioned as the lead with first billing. And from what I understand about Blade Runner, I think that it’s possible Robin Wright’s character is going to hire Gosling’s character to investigate the disappearance of her daughter, or someone like that. And then maybe he runs into Harrison Ford along the way.”

Directed by Denis Villeneuve from a script by Hampton Fancher (who co-wrote the original sci-fi classic) and Michael Green, Blade Runner 2 is currently scheduled to open in theaters on October 6, 2017. Are you excited for the movie?
