Robert Pattinson’s The Batman has officially added Barry Keoghan as a cast member.

One of the most anticipated films in recent memory, Robert Pattinson’s The Batman has been the subject of constant rumors. Many have suggested that Barry Keoghan will be starring as the Joker in the film, which would be quite an exciting prospect. Keoghan has cemented himself as one of the most versatile and brooding actors in recent memory, so it would be interesting to see him take on the role. Beyond that, the star is relatively young, and seeing his age reflected onto the character of the Joker would make for a distinctive take.

While those Joker claims haven’t been confirmed, Warner Bros. UK has confirmed via their 2022 preview that the Irish star will be appearing in the upcoming Robert Pattinson film. Barry Keoghan will be starring in the DC project as Officer Stanley Merkel, who is set to be Jim Gordon’s partner. Details on the character beyond that are slim.

Should those Joker rumors manifest, it would be chaotic as heck to see one of Gotham PD’s finest, and one of Jim Gordon’s friends become the Clown Prince of Crime. Only time will tell if those rumors are true or if Barry Keoghan is really just playing a mild-mannered police officer in the Robert Pattinson film.

Here is the official synopsis for The Batman:

Two years of stalking the streets as the Batman (Robert Pattinson), striking fear into the hearts of criminals, has led Bruce Wayne deep into the shadows of Gotham City. With only a few trusted allies — Alfred Pennyworth (Andy Serkis), Lt. James Gordon (Jeffrey Wright) — amongst the city’s corrupt network of officials and high-profile figures, the lone vigilante has established himself as the sole embodiment of vengeance amongst his fellow citizens.

When a killer targets Gotham’s elite with a series of sadistic machinations, a trail of cryptic clues sends the World’s Greatest Detective on an investigation into the underworld, where he encounters such characters as Selina Kyle/aka Catwoman (Zoë Kravitz), Oswald Cobblepot/aka the Penguin (Colin Farrell), Carmine Falcone (John Turturro), and Edward Nashton/aka the Riddler (Paul Dano). As the evidence begins to lead closer to home and the scale of the perpetrator’s plans becomes clear, Batman must forge new relationships, unmask the culprit, and bring justice to the abuse of power and corruption that has long plagued Gotham City.

Directed by Matt Reeves, the film stars Robert Pattinson as the titular hero, Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, Paul Dano as the Riddler, Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon, John Turturro as Carmine Falcone, Peter Sarsgaard as Gil Colson, Jayme Lawson as Bella Reál, with Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, and Colin Farrell as the Penguin.
