‘Batman: The Animated Series’ VR To Come Alive Before Your Eyes Thanks To View-Master

Prepare to experience Batman: The Animated Series in a new way: Mattel’s View-Master VR Viewer will feature the seminal TV show, the toy company announced today. Partnering with Warner Bros. the toy will make use of OTOY Inc cinematic rendering technology to recreate experiences based on beloved series’ fan-favorite episodes (if “Heart of Ice” isn’t included, heads are gonna roll).

Mattel and Warner Bros. have John Hammond-ed this, sparing no expense to bring in the brains behind Batman: The Animated Series – producer/director Bruce Timm and writer/producer Paul Dini. They collaborated with OTOY’s artists and engineers on the VR project. Fellow returnees include some of the original voice cast: Kevin Conroy (Batman), Mark Hamill (The Joker) Loren Lester (Robin) and Tara Strong (Batgirl) all reprised their roles, with the help of Batman: The Animated Series voice director Andrea Romano.

“OTOY is the perfect partner to create new VR content for View-Master,” said Mark Morse, Director Advanced Concepts at Mattel, in a press release. “They’re light-years ahead of the curve when it comes to their rendering capabilities. The Batman experience we previewed at San Diego Comic-Con was just a glimpse into the incredible things to come from this collaboration.”

OTOY is a Los Angeles-based firm whose “aim is to deliver real-time, cinema-quality 3D graphics to filmmakers, 3D designers, animators, game developers.” This new partnership will be able to display ORBX media, a form of holographic streaming file format. It permits “cinematic quality immersion on mobile VR and AR devices.”

Sounds awesome but I’m reserving judgment until I see more. That said, the promise here is enormous; I hope they pull it off.  Here’s some executives saying executive things.

“The creative energy I put into OTOY goes all the way back to my childhood. Both Batman: The Animated Series and View-Master were fixtures during that part of my life. It’s a dream come true for me to have the chance to bring them together with Mattel and Warner Bros. Consumer Products and participate in the View-Master’s evolution to VR and beyond,” said Jules Urbach, founder and CEO of OTOY.

Kelly Gilmore, Senior Vice President, Global Toys, Warner Bros. Consumer Products, said: “We’re thrilled to partner with Mattel and OTOY on this exciting collaboration with Warner Bros. Animation that will give Batman fans around the world a chance to watch the stories and adventures of their favorite Super Hero in this all-new format.”

A release date has not been set.
