Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice hit theaters 4 years ago today and while it caused a lot of negative discussions, it gave us Ben Affleck’s Caped Crusader.
Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman is one of the most discussed superhero films of all time. Fans around the world argue whether the film is good or not to this day and one of the main topics they touch upon is Ben Affleck’s Caped Crusader. Whether you like Batman v Superman or not, you can’t deny how perfect Affleck was as The Batman. From his comic book-accurate costume to his old and weary portrayal of Bruce Wayne/Batman, Affleck immediately became the fan-favorite version of the DC Comics hero.
After Batman v Superman was released to negative reviews, Affleck’s interest in playing the Dark Knight wained. But, it wasn’t until he began filming Justice League that he truly wanted to leave the role. With Warner Bros. constantly meddling with the film and the family tragedy that director Zack Snyder faced, Affleck left the character behind entirely. He was once set to write, direct and star in a Batman standalone movie, but decided to leave it over fears of drinking himself to death due to what happened during the filming of Justice League.
When I first saw Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, I loved it. The thing I walked away loving most was Ben Affleck’s Batman. He was raw, brutal, not to be trifled with and he totally wrecked Superman. The Batman we were seeing was 20 years into his career – a seasoned veteran. He had all of the gadgets, toys and a Batcave filled with trinkets and a trophy or two. His Batmobile was sleek and had far more tech than we’ve ever seen in a Batman film and when the film was over you wanted ten more movies with Affleck.
Now that Affleck has officially exited the role, Matt Reeves has cast Robert Pattinson as a much younger version of the Dark Knight. His film will follow year two of the vigilante’s career and will feature Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, Colin Farell as The Penguin, Paul Dano as The Riddler, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, John Turtturo as Carmine Falcone and Peter Sarsgaard as Gil Coulson. The film recently paused filming due to the Coronavirus, but is expected to hit theaters June 25th, 2021.
